Archaeological evidence suggests that workers moved these massive stones using wooden sledges pulled with ropes over sand that had been moistened with water to reduce friction. Modern scientific experiments have demonstrated that this technique would have made transporting heavy blocks significantly easier.
To raise the stones to higher levels, researchers believe that long earthen ramps were gradually extended as construction progressed.
Who Really Built the Pyramids?
For many years, a popular myth claimed that the pyramids were built by slaves. However, archaeological discoveries tell a very different story.
Excavations have uncovered workers’ villages, bakeries, kitchens, medical facilities, and even cemeteries built near the pyramids. These findings indicate that the builders were skilled laborers and craftsmen who were respected for their contribution to one of the greatest engineering achievements in history.
Their work reflects the remarkable organization and administrative strength of ancient Egyptian civilization.
Why Was Giza Chosen?
The Giza Plateau was selected because of its elevated, solid limestone foundation and its proximity to the Nile, making it easier to transport construction materials by boat during the annual flood season.
In addition, the pyramids are aligned with extraordinary accuracy to the four cardinal directions, demonstrating the ancient Egyptians’ impressive knowledge of astronomy and surveying.
Mysteries That Still Fascinate Scientists
Despite centuries of research, several questions remain unanswered:
- How did the builders achieve such incredible engineering precision?
- How were some of the heaviest stone blocks, weighing dozens of tons, transported and positioned?
- Could there still be hidden chambers waiting to be discovered?
Today, researchers continue exploring the pyramids using advanced technologies such as cosmic-ray scanning and three-dimensional imaging. These methods have revealed previously unknown voids within the Great Pyramid, although their purpose remains a mystery.
